This past May 24 weekend, I had the honour of playing my bagpipes for Jim and Shalon’s wedding in the new Garden Chapel at Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge, Ontario. Like many of the weddings I pipe for, I was the only musician at the ceremony, so I played for the processionals, the signing of the marriage certificate and the recessional.
My favourite time to play during a wedding ceremony is for the recessional of the newlyweds and their guests. The bagpipes help to get peoples’ blood pumping and get everyone in the party mood.
On the way out, even the largest of doorways is a piper’s nemesis. The foot and half you gain in height means that you quickly develop the ability to duck while playing. Think of it as one of the hidden requirements of the job!
